The Center for Minimally Invasive Services at WellStar Windy Hill Hospital provides interventional radiology, specializing in uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) and other non-invasive procedures. UFE also is provided at WellStar Cobb and WellStar Kennestone hospitals.
UFE is a revolutionary way of treating fibroid tumors of the uterus. Fibroid tumors are masses of fibrous and muscle tissue in the uterine wall which are benign, but may cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pain in the pelvic region or pressure on the bladder or bowel. The non-invasive procedure involves guiding a catheter in each of the uterine arteries, then injecting small particles to block the arterial branches that supply blood to the fibroids. This leads to fibroid shrinkage and symptom relief.
